On Monday, we had only a short walk on a rocky path from the
church to reach a family of 12 church members (3 generations), living in a two
room house. In April a mango tree had
fallen on the roof and the ensuing rains had filled the house. For several days, the young mother of five
focused on keeping young baby dry.
When we arrived, we met a grandmother, her handicapped husband,
the granddaughter and three of her children, who had been allowed to skip
school because of our arrival. We
immediately realized that we had our work cut out for us—the tin roof needed
additional supports as well as a better use of the tarp that had been held in
place by pieces of wood and cinder blocks.
There was a make shift ladder and Blaine was nominated to
climb up to do the work. We were happy
to go back today when it rained and found only a few drips! Our great kids also collected rocks and built
a French drain and they swept the floors and walls inside.
The best part of the experience though, was getting to know this precious family. I have a feeling that we will stay in touch for a long time.
